Region VII Education Service Center Brings this Site Live!
This web site is currently under development to highlight a serious ongoing problem at Overton High School that has existed for years. The web address for this site has not been publicized or even disseminated to the involved parties yet. It had been excluded from being indexed by any search engines. No one knew it existed yet!
We were hoping the situation would be resolved to everybody’s mutual satisfaction (more than likely an equitable solution would to everybody’s mutual dissatisfaction ) so that this site would never see the light of day.
But Thursday morning, someone at the Region VII Education Service Center in Kilgore mistakenly provided our URL to Lightspeed Systems thinking it was Overton ISD’s website. Shortly before 2PM Lightspeed Systems used their website crawler to index this website. Within 3 minutes, Region VII was notified of their mistake.
A little over an hour later, Overton ISD had been notified by a representative from Region VII and school officials started exploring this website for the next hour.
By the way, I can’t tell if it is Principal Smith’s computer or Superintendent DuBose’s computer, but you are putting the entire campus and school system at risk using a computer with outdated Windows operating system and MS Internet Explorer 7. IE7 was declared obsolete and superseded by Internet Explorer 8 in March 2009. Using IE7 is considered a major security risk and it should not be used on a computer utilized by a school district. Your operating system is also very vulnerable to security exploits as it is outdated.
After the school officials explored this site they then disseminated the web address to members of the school board (I am also surprised that your computer at the bank is using outdated operating system and Internet Explorer 8. IE8 has also been superseded and is also considered a major security risk. I believe using that computer with that out of date software at a financial institution is a violation of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. You should check with your compliance officer.)
Furthermore, school personnel and board member(s) informed other people ( including former school system employees) of the web address of this site therefore in effect launching this website to the public. You know how news spread. Thanks a bunch but it would have been better if you had waited to start telling everyone about this site until it was proven that you could not solve the bullying issue.
Also, you are more than welcome to post comments explaining your positions on the bullying issues at Overton High School if you desire. They will be posted unedited unless they are abusive or just a diatribe.
We have ongoing confidential preliminary conversations with representatives of local, state, regional and national news media concerning this situation as well as several elected and appointed officials at the local and state level. We have also been in consultation with advocacy groups that exist to help stop and prevent bullying at schools as well as other organizations the represent special populations that have been targeted at Overton High School.
Our hope is that this situation will be resolved in the near future and further use of this site will be about the positive aspects of Overton ISD. But make no mistake, the atmosphere that allows bullying at Overton High School for the past few years must change, and soon!
If you will take note, we have not mentioned any student, parents or other person’s name other than elected officials and school administration personnel publicly named by the school system. If anybody makes public statements, those will be considered fair game to be used with attribution. This includes statements to the press, statements made during public meetings or posted on social media sites.
Thanks for visiting!
